With friends like Rachael Ray, does the Arab world need enemies like Brigitte Bardot?
A Paris court on Tuesday convicted Brigitte Bardot of provoking
discrimination and racial hatred for writing that Muslims are
destroying France. Brigitte Bardot wrote an angry letter criticizing Muslims in 2006.
A leading French anti-racism group known as MRAP filed a lawsuit last year over a letter she sent to then-Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy. The remarks were published in her foundation's quarterly journal. In the December 2006 letter to Sarkozy, now the president, Bardot said France is "tired of being led by the nose by this population that is destroying us, destroying our country by imposing its acts." She was referring to the Muslim feast of Aid el-Kebir, celebrated by slaughtering sheep. French anti-racism laws prevent inciting hatred and discrimination on racial or religious or racial grounds. Bardot had been convicted four times previously for inciting racial hatred. (Via Radar)
Really tough to find a favorite here. On the one hand, this makes 5 convictions for Brigitte on charges of inciting racial hatred, which suggests that it is as difficult for her not to incite racial hatred as it is for Sammy Hagar to obey the speed limit. On the other hand, her crime was criticizing animal sacrifice, which, in the States, might seem like protected speech. On the other other hand, a) there is plenty of secular killing in France, and b) of the challenges facing France, Aid el-Kibr seems low on the list. BB may still be steamed because Francois Ozon shot down her 9 Femmes script. If Rach's people are agreeable, perhaps they could settle the question of a Palestinian state once and for all by having her wrestle Brigitte Bardot.
