Cod been feeling a little down at the gills in the wake of wading through the Foxworthy Feeding Frenzy over to Mr. Gum's. He posed the "you might be an indie-yuppie if...." query, and people have been jumping on it like Gallos on grapes*--200+ comments as of noon today. Evidently, many struggle with the paradox of becoming old, while remaining cool, to their amazement. If you do not have time for all 200 entries, you can get some of the "whoa, I'm listening to Interpol and driving a Honda Odyssey," feeling with a quick listen to LCD Soundsystem's (remember them?) "Losing my Edge." Much more cheering is Grambo's pimping of Dorkwave. As they describe it, it is: "Dorkwave is all about the music that got you beat up or called a freak, fag, squid, etc. in school. Not just that, but new music that would potentially have the same effect." I was happy to learn about this formulation, having recently completed congratulating myself for aquiring long ago, and hanging onto, Celluloid's Trilogy compilation--the fruit of an X-mas 1982 Harvard Coop gift certificate--thanks Mom and Dad--and an impractical no kill/no sell vinyl policy. (Full disclosure: the Fame soundtrack, and my Erik Nuri and the People People 12" also survive thanks to the same policy.) I salute Dorkwave, and would love reports from the front. The Dorkwave Soundsystem seems happy not to be in high school any more. That's good. Not sure the same can be said of the indie-yuppie-Foxworthians. War Dorkwave! I'm out.
*In fact, many of these wines come from some of California's most critically acclaimed producers, who charge from $25 to $100 or more a bottle. Clearly, consumers intent on intoxication can find far cheaper pathways, like a bottle of bourbon with 40 percent alcohol.
If anyone knows where I can find some of this "bourbon" mentioned in the Times, let me know. This buying a $75 Cabernet just to take the edge off is really burning a hole in my pocket.
Re: cheap thrills- are you looking for bonded bourbon or straight?
3/4 L. of bonded 100 proof Ol' Grand Dad lists for under $16:
