I confess that I have, Nick Adams stizz, not ventured into the swamp of EMP rehashes. However, the passing reference to Critical Karaoke at Soul Sides piqued me, and at the end of a day where the man has been rubbing the Cod's scales tail to nose, I appreciated the piquing. As one who is fond of extremes of length in pop songs, and thus fond of sorting iTunes lib by time and listening to longests or shortests, this format, where you discuss the song, for exactly the length of the song, while the song plays behind you, the prospect of doing songs like "!!!!!," or 12XU is almost as appealing as the thought of doing songs like Recurring Dreams or Casual Friday.** What makes this an awesome idea is also what makes it seem potentially unendurable--if it is a song you like, it would take a real virtuoso to make you not want the Karaoke Critic to shut up, and like Shannon says, let the music play. Conversely, if it is a song you don't know, or don't care about, having someone talk over it is unlikely to sell you on its merit. Still, I can think of plenty of papers that I have heard and given that would have been improved by having being the length of "Steal my Sunshine," on the subject of "Steal my Sunshine," and delivered while "Steal my Sunshine" plays in the background. Dizzied by the response to Desert Island Cookbooks, I would welcome any comments that attempted to praise or decry a particular song written in the time it takes to listen to the song.
*Even if you insist on buying industrial frozen veggies, that ground beef that comes in long thick tubes, and think organic food is for suckers, get some real eggs the next time you make bearnaise or a fritatta. You will jump back and kiss yourself, mistaking yourself for Escoffier.
**It goes without saying that !!! must cover "!!!!!"!
I'm sorry, I know they're imperviously hip and all, but !!! has got to be one of the dumbest band names ever. It's actually worse than "And And! And" (the parody of a bad band name, featured in Roddy Doyle's The Commitments).
