Not to get all Double Fold on you, but at times there are reasons to read the paper DI/DO.** Especially if you like being puzzled. In place of the familar Zachy's ad on the back page this week was a "A Salute to Fortune Magazine." The aptly named Carter Lusher explains it better than I could:
Well, I knew that the wine industry would love the "Drink Wine and Live Longer" Fortune Magazine cover when I wrote Ah, the wine industry's wet dream on the cover of Fortune, but I did not think that another magazine would get giddy as well. The entire back page of today's New York Times Dining In section is an advertisement headlined "A Salute to FORTUNE Magazine" with a full size reproduction of the cover. Then there is some throwaway text about resveratrol. The punch line is the small version of the current Wine Spectator cover with the suggestion to pick up a copy on newstands or subscribe.
To emphasize, it may have been a mistake for WS to reprint the cover in a size where the small print is visible. The salient cover text reads: "Drink wine and live longer" (asterisk) (Small print: "The Chemical reservratol, found in red wine, has shown signs of helping ward off the ill effects of old age.") That is to say, do not run out and buy a jug of Three Thieves, and then start planning your Halley's Comet party, thought you might be safe to start designing the invitations for the Dakota Fanning casts her first vote party.
*Frreals, it is American heart month. Do what you need to do. Make the people you care about do the same.
**Of course, the electronic edition is convenient when the hotel you're staying at filets the DIDO with the review of the restaurant in the lobby out of all of the newspapers available in the hotel. I thought this kind of thing only happened at college.
