I'm on the record as a non Top Chef watcher, but trapped in JFK air traffic control jail, with naught but a Jet Blue seat back to entertain me, I did stumble across a bit of Top Chef oddness. This was a rerun, and I have no idea when the original aired, but an irregularity did pop right out at me. The snippet I saw featured chefs blindfolded, trying to ID mostly Asian ingredients. The overall performance was poor, but there was one fellow who said "sriracha" when they put chili sauce in his moutth. Aside from the obvious, and chilling, echoes of the child-rearing techniques of certain former stars of The Facts of Life, this is sort of lame. To use the native name for a product, and get dinged for it, is in this case not quite in I say "gesiers confit," you say "fried gizzards," but almost. Given the brief peep into the rather robust TC discourse on the internets thanks to M. Vigneron, I'd be interested to know what the deal with this was.
Wait, a contestant got dinged for calling it "sriracha?" I feel so justified in my non-Top Chef watching now. Thank you.
