Sherman has long taken, and been given, more credit than is his due. The best defensive commander of the War was Confederate general Joseph Johnston who burned what was of value before Sherman's advance. It was Johnston who invented the road mine, who lived of the land, burnt bridges, and eventually set the match to Atlanta. His retreat tactics are still taught in military academies around the world. Without Johnston Sherman is nothing.
